Kajaani City Theatre

Kajaani City Theatre is one of Finland’s leading theatres.

Kajaani lies in northern Finland at 130km from the Russian border and c 250km south of the Arctic Circle. It is the regional centre of Kainuu and has some 37,500 inhabitants.

Kajaani City Theatre started as an ensemble-based repertoary theatre over a century ago. Today it is well-known for its ambitious and open-minded approach towards arts, society at large and manifestations of diversity in human experience with a special focus on issues relevant to the people in the region. The select plays are often Finnish novelties premiering in Kajaani.

Kajaani City Theatre is also one of Finland’s five regional theatres. It tours mainly within the Provinces of Kainuu and Northern Ostrobothnia which consists of 38 municipalities with the population totalling 300,000.

The principal stage in the theatre building seats 186 people.

Sissilinna stage is dedicated to theatre productions for children and the youth and those also serve as the home stage for the regional theatre.

The Theatre’s programme includes on average five premieres per year. This amounts to appr. 300 performances with one third of them are performed on tour.
